We are just two days into the Games of the Small States of Europe and Team Malta is already making the country proud.

Malta won no less than 8 gold medals, 4 silver medals, and 11 bronze medals on the second day of the games alone.

The first gold medal went to judoka Katryna Esposito.

In athletics, gold was achieved in the men’s and women’s 800 meters by Jared Micallef and Gina McNamara, respectively.

Colette Sultana clinched gold in the women’s singles squash.

In long jump, Clare Azzopardi secured gold, while Peppina Dalli did the same in the pole vault.

Gold was also won by Jordan Gusman and Lisa Marie Bezzina in the men’s and women’s 10,000 meters, respectively.

The stunning results come following yesterday’s spectacular opening ceremony that saw the participation of 900 athletes, including 200 Maltese, competing in 10 different sports disciplines.

Tennis player Elaine Genovese and athlete Matthew Galea Soler carried the Maltese flag during the opening ceremony, followed by the rest of the Maltese contingent led by captain, shooter Eleanor Bezzina.

For the opening ceremony, Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja sang the Maltese national anthem as the Maltese flag was raised. Amber and Aidan also performed the official theme song of the Games.

The Maltese team is competing against eight other countries and will utilise 11 different facilities, which have undergone refurbishment and improvement in recent months.
