On 9th August 1999, the Maltese islands experienced its highest-ever recorded temperature of 44°C.

The scorching heatwave which gripped the country that year, broke previous temperature records as extreme heat posed challenges for everyone on the island who stormed to the beach to cool down.

Local weather page It-Temp Madwarna shared an infographic that shows the hottest temperatures around the world and the date when they were recorded.

“All the beaches were packed with people cooling off from the insufferable heat. Some elderly and vulnerable people passed away from this heat record,” it-Temp Madwarna wrote on Facebook.

This year’s unbearable heatwave came quite close to reaching this 24-year-old record especially when there were moments when the temperatures were constantly going up as high as 42.7°C
