Inspections for migrants residing in Malta irregularly continued yesterday with a series of spot checks on bus stops in Ħamrun and Marsa by the Malta Police Force assisted by the Detention Services.

28 persons were found on the island without the necessary permits and detained by authorities.

These persons, hailing from Ghana, Gambia, Afghanistan and Indonesia were transferred to a detention centre where the repatriation process has been started.

There have been a number of raids lately targeting visa over-stayers who might be asylum seekers that acquired international protection in another EU country than transferred themselves to Malta.

This would only allow them to stay on the island for another three months and does not entitle them to a work permit.

Refugees and asylum seekers with protection from the Maltese government cannot be returned to their country of origin while still under protection.
