A 35-year-old man from Ħaż-Żebbuġ has been hit with multiple charges after he ran over a police officer who stopped him during a road check in Attard earlier this week.

On the night of 29th-30th March, David Lineker Micallef was driving along Mdina Road when he encountered a road check. Police officers signalled him to stop but he sped in their direction, forcing them to get out of the way to avoid getting run over.

However, Micallef didn’t get far and was eventually arrested in Żebbuġ. Police searched his car, residence and garage and found heroin, cocaine, large quantities of cannabis that they didn’t believe was intended for his personal use, an unlicensed firearm and several rounds of ammunition.

The man is now facing several charges, including violently resisting arrest, lightly injuring a police officer, possession of illegal drugs and an unlicensed gun, disobeying police orders, dangerous driving, and relapsing.

He pleaded not guilty but didn’t file a request for bail at this stage. His lawyers requested he undergoes a toxicological test, which magistrate Lara Lanfranco requested. The court also instructed the prison director to place the suspect in a drug rehabilitation programme.
