Charlton Mifsud, a 39-year-old man from Mqabba, was charged today with assaulting three police officers at the Sliema police station last Friday.

Mifsud and his father had been summoned to the police station to answer to a report related to dangerous driving.

However, police said that Mifsud was extremely aggressive and started banging on the perspex screen, shouting at the officers, and refusing to provide them with his personal details.

When the police placed him under arrest, Mifsud allegedly resisted and assaulted the officers. One of them suffered a fractured wrist and the other suffered light injuries.

Mifsud pleaded not guilty, with his lawyer Lennox Vella warning that the officers had grabbed his client by the neck and shoved him to the floor. He requested bail, but the prosecution objected due to the serious nature of the crime, the risk that he could tamper with evidence, and the fact that he had previous brushes with the law.

Magistrate Kevan Camilleri refused to grant him bail.
