46 Turtle Hatchlings Make Their Way To Sea After Nest Hatches At Golden Bay

Malta has reached the halfway point in its turtle hatching season, as the fourth nest of the year successfully hatched, with 46 hatchlings making their way to the sea.
The nest, originally discovered at Għajn Tuffieħa on 16th July, was relocated to Golden Bay by Nature Trust Malta (NTM) and the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) to ensure its safety.
Of the 64 eggs in the nest, 46 hatched, with one hatchling guided to the sea after being found still in the nest.

Aimee Brincat, Director for Regulatory Affairs at ERA, praised the commitment of both ERA officers and NTM volunteers, highlighting the hard work involved, often carried out at odd hours to ensure the protection of these critically endangered species.
‘‘Such operations are only made possible through the hard work of ERA officers and Nature trust. Their unwavering commitment and sacrifice during these times, where they need to carry out work at odd hours of the day and with little to no warning in advance, is commendable. This is a clear commitment to save this critically endangered species.’’
With more nests expected to hatch this season, Malta remains dedicated to the conservation of these important sea creatures.
