560 Inmates Currently Reside In Malta’s Prison

560 people are currently inmates at Malta’s prison, the Corradino Correctional Facility. 

Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri revealed the detail following a series of parliamentary questions from MP Joe Giglio. 

Of the 560, 339 people are serving a prison sentence while 221 people are in the facility under preventative arrest and are still awaiting trial. 

Maltese make up the bulk of inmates serving a prison sentence (219) compared to foreigners (120). 

However, there are almost double the number of foreigners (142) to Maltese (79) who are under preventative arrest. 

People from all across the globe are in Malta’s prison whether that’s from South America, North America, Europe, Africa or Asia. 

No details were given on the exact figures of nationalities. 

The number of people who work at the facility is 457 spread over a wide range of departments.
