6 Practical Ways To Support The Black Lives Movement From Malta

The murder of George Floyd at the hands of a Minnesota police officer has sparked global outcry like never before.

People across the world are rallying behind the Black Lives Matter banner in an attempt to end systematic racism once and for all but not all are able to take to the streets in protest.

For those who are looking to support the movement in more ways than posting a black square on social media, there’s a number of things you can do.

1. Donate

The easiest way to contribute to the cause is to donate. Black Lives Matters is the most obvious choice but there are plenty of NGOs out there supporting anti-racism movements. Donating to local NGOs such as aditus and Migrant Women Association Malta also helps make change on a local level.

2. Volunteer

Even better than donating money is donating your time. Volunteering is a great way to get involved with the movement on a local scale, helping those who have been personally affected by racial prejudice and supporting the organisations that dedicate their existence to seeking justice.

3. Make your voice heard

With social media, your voice can be heard by millions in a matter of seconds. Joining in on campaigns such as #BlackoutTuesday shows that you are with change and not against it. But that’s just the beginning. To help further the agenda, write to your local paper, publish your work online and become a leader in your community so others can follow too.

4. Lobby your MP for change

People at the top are better placed than most to combat systematic racism. Unfortunately, Malta doesn’t tend to favour minority communities and it’s time to change that discourse. Your local MP is there to represent you and you need to let them know that you demand that they stand for change… and you won’t settle for anything less.

5. Educate yourself

Educate yourself on the Black Live Movements and how it is applicable to Malta’s situation. Malta has a migrant issue, which happens to be a racism issue too. Let’s not forget that the country also had its first racially-motivated killing over a year ago and two AFM soldiers have yet to be prosecuted for it.

6. Support black voices

Use social media to your advantage and use your platform to promote black voices. Retweet, repost and hashtag your posts with relevant, accurate information that can help spread the word and educate others on the inherent and worldwide problem of racism.

Malta is 9,000 km from the United States but that doesn’t mean you are less capable of inciting change.
