Salvu Mangion, 70, has been charged with the murder of 33-year-old Kyle Mifsud and is pleading not guilty.

Mangion has been accused of shooting Mifsud in the abdomen during an argument in Birgu on Sunday. Both men lived in the same housing estate and Mifsud was shot at the entrance of the block of apartments.

As reported by TVM, Police Inspector Stephen Gulia testified that officers found Mifsud writing in pain with a gunshot wound in his stomach.

Mifsud identified Mangion as the shooter as he lay bleeding and later passed away from his injuries.

As the case began, Mangion’s lawyers Franco Debono and Adreana Zammit asked the prosecution to confirm whether Mifsud had been found guilty of breaking into Mangion’s home and robbing him two years ago. The prosecution confirmed this was the case.

A request by the prosecution for a protection order to be issued in favour of Mifsud’s family was granted by Magistrate Abigail Critien.

Mangion was remanded in custody, with his defence lawyers not requesting bail at this stage.
