Malta’s police have fined 8,013 people for using a mobile phone while driving since January 2020, according to information provided to Parliament by Home Affairs Minister Byron Camilleri.

Camilleri was responding to a parliamentary question from Independent MP Godfrey Farrugia, saying that between January 2020 and November 2021, 8,013 tickets had been issued.

That amounts to roughly 11 people being fined each day over the period.

The minister informed Farrugia that the vast majority of those stopped by the police were not charged in court, but rather issued with a fine on the spot.

Anyone found using a phone while driving is liable to a fine of €100 in addition to having up to six penalty points added to their license.

Licenses are revoked in cases where more than 12 points are accumulated over a period of 12 months.
