82 Newly Licensed Cars Are Added To Malta’s Roads Every Single Day
There were 82 newly licensed vehicles added to Malta’s roads every single day over a three-month period the latest NSO figures have revealed.
In terms of actual stock (not including second-hand cars) the rate was a massive 45 new cars per day.
This means that by the end of June there were 391, 914 cars within the country’s road network.
With the number of cars practically expected to surpass the number of people within the next few years, Malta may as well be known as Europe’s ‘petrol-shaggers’.
The overwhelming majority of cars on Maltese roads are private passenger cars (77.6%), followed by commercial vehicles (13.6%).
The use of motorcycles still remains low, standing at 7.6%, despite initiatives from the government and their ability to alleviate the traffic issue.
The number of electric or hybrid cars is far more worrying, accounting for just 0.8% of the total amount with 3,280 on the roads.
By the end of June, there were 234,822 petrol-powered vehicles (59.9%) while 152,266 (38.9%) were diesel powered.
