9 Kilos Of Low-Quality Cannabis Found In Tarxien Following Days-Long Police Investigation
A Maltese youth has been arrested and is expected to be charged in court after a days-long police investigation resulted in a find of nine kilos of low-quality cannabis.
The 22-year-old man, who lives in Tarxien, was arrested after a search was undertaken on his vehicle and in his garage. Police found the cannabis packed into plastic bags.
A 23-year-old woman from Bormla was also held by police following the find. She might also be charged in court in relation to the find.
The youths could face charges including the possession of cannabis not for personal use.
The youth’s arrest comes the same day a man was sent to prison for possession.
A 23-year-old Sudanese man from Munxar was charged in court for possession of a cannabis plant and/or cannabis resin not for his personal use.
He pleaded guilty and was given a six-month prison sentence and fined €465.
Cannabis remains one of the most popular substances in Malta, with up to 22,000 Maltese people believed to have used cannabis.
While Malta has legalised medical cannabis and plans on exporting €1 billion of medical cannabis products abroad, the police and courts remain notoriously conservative when it comes to the personal use of cannabis, and continue to punish users with unusually heavy punishments.
While the Prime Minister of Malta, Joseph Muscat, has said he wants to legalise the personal use of cannabis, following countries like Canada and multiple US states, Reforms Junior Minister Julia Farrugia Portelli has yet to propose any legislation on the matter.
