992 Ukrainian Refugees Are Currently Benefitting From Temporary Protection In Malta
Just under 1,000 refugees from the Russian government’s invasion of Ukraine have been granted temporary protection in Malta.
Between March and May 2022, 1,002 refugees were given temporary protection in Malta, 992 of whom were people who fled the war in Ukraine.
The figure was released by the National Statistics Office (NSO) earlier today to commemorate World Refugee Day.
That’s almost 99% of all people who were given temporary protection over that period, 76% of whom were female.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine began on 24th February 2022. On 4th March, the European Union activated the Temporary Protection Directive, in response to the Ukrainian crisis.
In March, 191 refugees were granted protection in Malta, with the figure increasing each month up to 395 people in April and 416 in May.
The most common age group of people benefitting from the program is 35-64 years at 33%, with the youngest age group including 0-13 years at 29%.
A further 23% are 18-24-year-olds, 9% including those over 65 years of age, and 6% are within the 14-17 range.
4% of those benefitting from the program are unfortunately unattended minors.
