Ħamrun witnessed a particularly action-packed night yesterday, with a car bomb scare, a car fire and a fight occurring within 12 hours of each other.
Yesterday evening, the police and the Armed Forces’ Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit were called in to Triq Mile End, a stone’s throw away from the Labour Party’s headquarters, to investigate a bomb scare in a truck. The truck driver claimed that the driver’s seat had shifted since he left the vehicle, causing him to fear a bomb had been placed under the seat. However, this turned out to be a false alarm.
Then, at around 3am, a car caught fire in the same street, with the damage spreading to a car parked next to it and the facade of the adjacent building. Police investigations are ongoing and there is no reported evidence that these two incidents are connected.
A few hours earlier, at around 1am, police were called in after a man was found injured following a fist fight in Triq Nazzjonali. According to a police statement, the 55-year-old man was assaulted by a group of people while walking in the street, two suspects of whom have been arrested.
