Three men who stand accused of assassinating journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia will return to court on Thursday morning, the police have announced in a statement.

During the sitting, the police will start presenting the evidence they have compiled against the three suspects – George Degiorgio (Ic-Ciniz), his brother Alfred Degiorgio (Il-Fulu) and Vincent Muscat (Il-Kohhu) At the end of this stage, magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech will decide whether the police have enough evidence to commit the three men to trial.

The police have said they have electronic evidence to pin the three men to the scene of the crime on the afternoon of 16th October. Alfred Degiorgio and Vincent Muscat are said to have been stationed in Bidnija, keeping watch as Caruana Galizia approached her car – where a bomb had already been placed. As she approached, Alfred Degiorgio sent a SMS to his brother George – who was stationed on a cabin cruiser out at sea.

The men used new 2G mobile phones to communicate with each other so as to evade data triangulation. According to reports, George Degiorgio was caught because his unregistered phone had ran out of credit and he had to use his personal phone to top it up and send the fatal SMS to the electronic device which had been planted on the bomb inside Caruana Galizia’s car.
