A French astronaut chilling (and probably working) in the International Space Station voted by proxy in last weekend’s French election, and Maltese expats are incredulous that they’re still not able to vote while on the same planet.

Thomas Pesquet gave power of attorney to a colleague to vote in his name from 400 kilometers above Earth’s surface.

Maltese people who are eligible to vote but live abroad have called for a revamp of the outdated system which requires them to fly home to vote.

Although there are some incentives for cheaper flights from chosen destinations, for many the journey home is a lot of extra time and resources they cannot afford.
