‘A Matter Of Life Or Death’: Former PD Leader Proposes Retaking Driving Theory Test After Years Have Passed

Former Partit Demokratiku (PD) Leader and doctor Anthony Buttigieg recently posed the question of whether drivers should be obliged to take the driving theory test after some years have passed.

Publishing his thoughts on social media, Buttigieg pondered on the idea, saying that when asked, he brought parallels between being a driver and a doctor – both dealing with a matter of life or death.

“Someone messaged me asking why, once we already have a license, should we be tested again on the Highway Code, in order to renew it? Well, it is a matter of life and death,” Buttigieg said on Facebook.

“As a doctor, over 30 years ago, I got my license to practice medicine. Does that mean that I can continue to? No. Every doctor, especially in emergency care, must show he is up to date by undergoing, and passing courses every few years,” he explained.

“My profession deals with life and death. People behind a steering wheel or motorcycle handlebars do the same. Why should they be different?”

“Unless you have a photographic memory or are a genius, 90% of people will forget the fundamentals of the highway code over time.”

Speaking with Lovin Malta, Buttigieg further elaborated on his thoughts, saying that it’s a simple fact that many people in this country have forgotten the highway code.

“When to give way, what is the national speed limit – why brake down to 60 km per hour on the fast lane of the Mrieħel by-pass when the speed limit is 80 km per hour?” he questioned.

“The deadly accidents are often caused by speeding and driving intoxicated, but many of the lesser ones are down to people simply not knowing if they are in the right or not. Basically due to misunderstandings.”

“And making people refresh their knowledge will also make people aware again of safe driving practices. Like simply using their indicator, and looking into their mirrors…”

Lovin Malta had also previously published an opinion piece suggesting the introduction of refresher tests so that drivers can be up to date with the highway code.

His reaction came after Kacey Sciberras was the latest victim on Malta’s roads, who had her life taken away from her at the tender age of 17.

Since her untimely death, many have called for better infrastructural planning and mitigation techniques to limit road fatalities.

What do you think of Anthony’s suggestions? Would you be up for taking the driving theory test again?
