A Petition To Protect Malta’s Horses Will Soon Be In Joseph Muscat’s Hands

As Malta’s summer heat takes its toll, we’ve all been guilty of taking the easy route and hiding in our air-conditioned spaces for as long as we can. But what about our four legged friends who share the road, pulling carriages full of tourists in the sun? We’re sure the karozzin horses are less than thrilled to be trotting along the hot asphalt, carrying a family of four from Manchester. While karozzin drivers might treat their horses well, there are still many issues with the conditions the animals have to work in.

An online petition on change.org has been making the rounds throughout summer with the aim of standardising conditions for Malta’s karozzin horses. So far the petition has gathered 18,625 out of their desired 25,000 target (which is around 72%).

But as Joseph Muscat begins working on Malta’s next big projects, it seems people are using the time heavily recirculating the link in groups like “Expats Malta”, “MALTA”, and “RUBS (Malta)”, pushing for at least 1,400 more signatures.

Here’s what the petition is calling for in particular:

– Full transparency regarding the horses’ rights

– How many hours they are able to work from morning until evening

– Seasonal work-hour adjustments

– How far they are allowed to travel to and from work when not transported

– How often water needs to be provided

– How often they must receive regular health checks

The petition’s impassioned call to action ends with a request to change how karozzin horses are viewed, as living animals and not transport machines.

“The Animal Welfare Department should be given more power regarding the welfare of these animals and not Transport Malta. These are animals – not machines,” the petition’s final plea states.

According to some posts, if at least 20,000 signatures are gathered – with the hopes of a total of 25,000 – the online petition will be passed on to Mr Muscat himself, and the Prime Minister will be pressured to address the topic head-on.
