A Purr-Fect Jackpot: Cat Volunteer Wins €5,892 Through Malta’s VAT Lottery After Collecting Bags Of Receipts
A dedicated cat volunteer has won €5,892 from four receipts at the monthly Maltese VAT lottery and has pledged to use the money to help these animals.
The latest lottery results, covering receipts submitted in March, revealed revealed the ID cards of 35 winners, including one person who struck gold four times.
After some people raised the alarm that something fishy was going on, this lucky winner revealed herself to be Anna Vella, who collects shopping receipts from the public to raise funds for a colony of cats.
The volunteer posted a photo of several bags stuffed with thousands of signed receipts that she submitted to the lottery.
“I have been collecting receipts from the public for years so I can take care of 200 cats that I keep in a beautiful farm,” she wrote in the Are You Being Served Facebook group.
She said the money is used on rent (€800 a month), transport, food, medicine, and vet costs.
Besides receipts, Vella also collects water bottles for BCRS machines, and Royal Canon, Nestlè and Kwiksave wrappings.
“I can assure you that I don’t know any top person and I never even had much luck; in fact I suffered a lot in life,” she said to quash rumours of foul play.
“I simply received a large number of receipts and signed them; they didn’t fall from the sky. Thank God we won €6,000 but the money has already been spent to cure two cats with serious health problems, and those who know me know that it is true.”
“Someone won double what I did with a single receipt and I congratulate them.”
This isn’t the first time Vella has won the VAT lottery, and she urged people to follow her Facebook page and help her maintain the cat colony.
“We need a lot of help because we don’t ask people for money, but instead we collect and save up what most people throw away,” she said.
