‘A Tired Government’: Mark Anthony Sammut Says Drink Driving Laws A Reaction To PN’s Proposals

Shadow Transport Minister Mark Anthony Sammut said the government only decided to introduce new laws to combat driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol after the Opposition proposed similar legislation last week.

“We had to announce a private member’s bill for the government to wake up from its slumber and realise that we had to take action since there is too much abuse on our roads and too many people are dying.”

“The government has now announced measures that are in line with what we had proposed a few days ago, including drug and alcohol tests, effective imprisonment for people who kill others while driving under the influence, harsher fines, and the suspension of driving licenses.”

“After months of repeated appeals from the Opposition, doctors, experts and NGOs to introduce these laws, the government only acted after the PN took the initiative by presenting a bill in Parliament.”

“It is clear that the government is tired. It no longer takes the initiative, and simply reacts to what the Opposition proposes.”

“We will continue consulting with experts and associations and follow what the government is proposing. We are committed to ensuring safer streets.”
