A Win For Mistra: Appeals Court Scraps Permit For Disputed Xemxija Towers
The Appeals Court has taken the decision to scrap the permit for the disputed tower development along Xemxija Ridge which would overlook Mistra.
Chief Justice Mark Chetcuti ordered the Environment and Planning Tribunal to once again reassess the permit, revoking the rejection of the neighbours’ requests.
This comes after works started on the site in March, even though the permit in question was granted back in 2013.
Typically, permits will no longer remain valid if the works are not started within five years.
In this light, the court has now asked the Tribunal to reassess the permit and make sure that it is in line with the current plans and policies.
Activists hailing from Moviment Graffitti had even expressed their anger at the works which were happening on the site of the ex-Mistra Village in Xemxija.
Machinery and workers started bulldozing the area on 27th March as part of the controversial project to build a 12-storey, 744-apartment complex on Mistra Ridge.
However, the application in question was still being heard in the Court of Appeals at the time.
