Abela Calls Meeting Over Power Cuts After Commerce Chamber’s ‘Public In Paralysis’ Statement

Prime Minister Robert Abela has called for a meeting with key stakeholders after the Chamber of Commerce’s strong statement over the country’s unprecedented power supply crisis.

“I asked MCESD Chairman to convene a meeting of the social partners. The Government will be updating MCESD on the present climate challenges, energy and the ongoing and upcoming works to strengthen the electricity distribution system,” Abela said this afternoon.

The Chairman of the Malta Council for Economic and Social Development (MCESD) has now been asked to convene a meeting.

Malta’s spent no less than seven entire days with regular, lengthy power cuts, with everyone from pregnant mothers to sick patients in Mater Dei to Malta’s dairy industry struggling to make it through one of the worst heatwaves to hit the island in years.

And just this morning, the Chamber of Commerce urged action from the government to protect the nation’s interests.

“This current state of play cannot persist and worst of all repeat itself – the right decisions and timely investment need to be taken now. This country needs to have a long term economic and social vision that goes beyond the political spectrum.”
