Prime Minister Robert Abela has called on the Auditor General to open an investigation into whether any public funds given to the medical sector were not used appropriately.

In the case that any funds were misused or unused, the government would move to recoup any and all money.

Aside from any misused funds, Abela also asked the office to look into loans Steward had taken out from Bank of Valletta, whereupon the Maltese government was mentioned in the contract.

“The Opposition stated the amount of €400 million was given by the Government to the concessionaires and that the island was not given the equivalent value in medical services and related investments,” Abela said.

He pledged that “all actions” would be taken to recoup the money if it was found to have been misused.
