Abela Silent As Government Involved In Major Corruption Yet Again, Grech Says

Malta’s government is once again involved in a major corruption case involving Transport Malta officials but Prime Minister Robert Abela is yet to officially comment or take action, PN Leader Bernard Grech has said.

“Who was the minister involved and why have we not heard from Prime Minister Robert Abela? Why has there not been action taken? What is holding Abela back? What is he worried about?” Grech asked in a radio interview on Net FM.

“Abela is obliged to answer and ensure these things do not occur and if they do, then he should act.”

Three Transport Malta officials have been charged with corruption when it came to driving theory tests. However, what has caught people’s attention is the reference to a minister and a political party in the case.

Clint Mansueto, the Transport Malta official believed to be a ring leader in the case, told investigators that he was “pressured” to pass someone as they were “working at a villa belonging to a government minister”.

His chats reportedly reveal connections with a political party that told them which candidates should pass their test. A list of almost 200 names of people believed to have benefitted from the racket was found on Mansueto’s phone.

Both political parties have denied the claims. However, one of the persons charged, Philip Edrick Zammit, is a local councillor charged in the case who only left the Labour Party a month ago.

The investigation dates back to 2020. Payments were reportedly made with cash and a diary of Mansueto has several names, ID numbers and dates of relative driving exams.

Most, if not all, Cabinet ministers have denied being part of the plot. However, sources insist that some ministers who have issued denials are very much involved in the case.
