Prime Minister Robert Abela is set to announce Malta’s formal recognition of the state of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly.

Abela flew to New York for the UNGA, where over 190 world leaders will congregate to discuss current affairs.

He reiterated his pledge to use this occasion to formally recognise the state of Palestine.

“This is part of the Prime Minister’s commitment and Malta’s consistent position in favour of a two-state solution,” a government statement read.

“Malta’s position also calls for dialogue and peace in the Middle East, while condemning the 7th October attacks by the Hamas terrorist group, which should have no role in the state of Palestine.”

“We appeal for the unconditional release of the remaining hostages and call for a permanent end to the war in Gaza.”

A number of countries, such as the UK, France, Canada, Australia and Portugal, have all said they will recognise a Palestinian state, while Spain, Ireland and Norway took that decision last year.
