Abortion Dispute In Partit Demokratiku As Pro-Life Pledge Signed By Leader Decried As ‘Senseless’ By His Own Partner

“Partit Demokratiku leader Godfrey Farrugia has been criticised by his own partner and fellow MP Marlene Farrugia after he signed a declaration in favour of entrenching Malta’s abortion ban into the constitution.

“As founder of PD, I wish to distance myself from the extremists and fundamentalists who came up with this senseless pledge,” Marlene Farrugia said, in a reference to Alleanza Bidla, the small party led by Ivan Grech Mintoff.

“It has nothing to do with regard for human life but has everything to do with subordination of females, and with the gross insensitivity and judgemental attitude for the plight of women who, because of the failures of society to nurture respect for womanhood, to encourage support for motherhood , to provide adequate relevant education, to ensure protection from violence, and access to contraception, find themselves in a position where they have to resort to killing their children by abortion.”

“The debate should be as to how are we going to create societies where women never need to entertain thoughts of aborting their babies.”

This contradicts the stance adopted by Godfrey Farrugia, who said after signing the Alleanza Bidle declaration that: “The Democratic Party is in favour of life from conception to death. We are against the killing of babies in the womb and of all human beings at any stage of their life.”

Marlene Farrugia called for a legal framework that will allow women to terminate unwanted pregnancies as soon as the foetus is able to live outside the womb. She said the state should shoulder the medical cost of such procedures and raise these children until they are adopted.

“That way the mother lives her life and continues with her choices,
while the child’s right to life and to make his/her own choices is fully respected,” she said. “Let us all be genuinely pro-life, pro choice for all humans (born and unborn), and pro-motherhood, not pro-subordination, pro-condemnation of women and pro-hypocrisy.”

“I will be ready to move a private member’s bill to protect the life of women and children, to give a choice to women AND unwanted babies any time in Parliament”

Farrugia took to social media after PD MEP candidate Camilla Appelgren went against the PD’s decision to sign the declaration.

“PD has no whip, since PD believes in finding common ground,” Appelgren said. “I as a member have the right to have my own view on abortion and am fully respected for my view.”
