‘Abortion Is Already Here’: This Is Why You Need To Attend This Sunday’s Pro-Choice Rally In Valletta
Following a two-year hiatus, an annual pro-choice rally is back this Sunday 25th September in Valletta, starting off with a march from Castille Square.
The pro-choice rally has always aimed to make people’s voices heard on the need of introducing abortion and expanding women’s healthcare on the Maltese islands.
Lovin Malta spoke with two of the organisations behind the rally, Doctors For Choice and Men Against Violence, to hear more about why people should attend this Sunday’s pro-choice rally.
“Abortion is a reality in Malta.”
Our Family Planning Advisory Service (FPAS) has, over its two years of operations so far, heard from hundreds of people in Malta who needed abortions,” a representative for DFC, an organisation made up of local doctors advocating and campaigning in favour of sexual and reproductive health and rights, told Lovin Malta.
“Some of these had unwanted pregnancies, some had wanted pregnancies but received a diagnosis of serious foetal anomaly, some were victims of sexual crime, and some could not continue their pregnancy due to health reasons.”
“Our rally is there to campaign for these people who need abortions but are left voiceless because of shame and stigma,” they said.
“Regardless of one’s personal views on abortion, the fact remains that you or someone you love may need an abortion in the future. Abortion must be safe and legal in Malta too.”
“Everyone should attend because everyone has women and girls in their lives that they love and care for that might need an abortion at some point in their lives,” a representative for Men against Violence told Lovin Malta.
The rally is being organised by local organisations Women’s Rights Foundation, Voice for Choice, Doctors for Choice, Young Progressive Beings, Parents for Choice, Integra, and Humanists Malta.
