Absolute Traffic Nightmare On Regional Road As Asphalting Works Cause Total Gridlock

Traffic has ground to a complete halt on Regional Road and surrounding streets due to asphalting works forcing the partial closure of one of Malta’s busiest roads.

Photos uploaded by Facebook page Maltese Roads Traffic Updates shows that traffic is starting from before the St Julian’s tunnels and continues all the way along the Kappara Junction to the Tal-Qroqq roundabout.

The northbound lane of Regional Road was closed at 5pm and will reopen at 5am, as has been the case since Monday and will continue to be so till Saturday. This is due to asphalting works, the final phase of the Regional Road project, which involves the widening of the north-south link to six lanes – three in each direction.

Infrastructure Malta has urged drivers to follow diversion signs to Salvu Psaila Street towards Birkirkara or via Msida Valley Road towards Tal-Qroqq and Kappara.

In a tweet, Infrastructure Malta CEO Fredrick Azzopardi apologised for the traffic jams caused . by the roadworks.

“We understand Regional Road night works caused delays,” he said. Road could not be closed later, to finish in time for early morning reopening. Thanks for your cooperation. Any inconvenience is regretted. Thanks to all supporting this operation. Infrastructure Malta is opening six new lanes this weekend.”
