The Nationalist Party has emphasised the urgent need for a resolution plan when it comes to the pressing garbage issue which is triggering a worrying increase in rats on Malta’s residential roads.

This comes after numerous calls and complaints were made from residents, especially those residing in touristic areas such as Msida, Sliema, St Julian’s, and Swieqi.

PN MP Eve Borg Bonello also called for quick resolution earlier this morning, after uploading a video to her social media platforms, urging Environment Minister Miriam Dalli to take action before a national crisis emerges.

“The country’s local councils are coming under significant pressure as they are, in fact, not yet responsible for waste collection. Therefore, it is important to take action today before tomorrow in order to protect our country’s reputation, and to also have clean localities,” the PN said in a statement.

This was the message that emerged from a press conference addressed by the Nationalist Party’s Local Councils Coordinator Charles Bonello, the Mayor of Swieqi Noel Muscat, the Mayor of Sliema John Pillow, and the Mayor of St Julian’s Guido Dalli, together with the President of the Eastern Regional Committee Anthony Chircop, regarding the waste crisis being faced by the residents of these localities and others due to the lack of planning by the government.

The speakers emphasised that there is a need for action to be taken today before tomorrow because this problem has been ongoing for a long time, but now the situation has escalated to the point where residents are fed up.

The PN continued to say that unfortunately, the local councils have never been given any real authority, despite all the complaints they have delivered to the relevant authorities.

“Due to this waste in the streets and the lack of enforcement, residents are now also experiencing a significant problem of rats,” it continued.

Therefore, the speakers emphasised the need for a discussion between the local councils and the authorities to implement solutions for more designated localities.
