Activist Breaks Down Malta’s Uglification With Viral Facebook Post: ‘Country Falling Apart Piece By Piece’
One Maltese man’s viral Facebook post has given a rather profound breakdown of the uglification in Malta that – in his eyes – only got worse with the passing years.
In two days, Daniel Muscat’s post, which was published on 13th August, has since garnered 2.7k reactions if not also the attention of numerous Maltese personalities.
“The country that I happened to be born in is becoming more and more unbearable to live in,” he began. “Every day, one of the first thoughts that come to my mind is what I could do to leave and start a life elsewhere.”
A move easier said than done, considering the life he, like many others, has built here.
“Greed has turned a country the size of a speck into a perpetual construction zone,” he said. “Cranes, closed roads, car accidents, dust, fumes, horrible blocks sticking out from everywhere, a sea lined with slime that sticks to you when you swim, beaches packed with deckchairs…”
Photos uploaded along with the social media post leave little to the imagination as Muscat made his case.
“Our country ended up being taken over by cliques of bullies and criminals,” he insisted, adding of how police were allegedly colluding with deckchair operations during a second Comino protest held on Sunday 14th August. “Deckchair operators who took a beautiful beach and made it theirs.”
“Our country is falling apart piece by piece with the blessing of the authorities, while others become richer from the rape.”
“And while others can enjoy a pool within their villa, or escape on their yacht, we have to scramble for space.”
Muscat also stressed that expats shouldn’t be used as a scapegoat excuse for the troubles he highlighted.
“The problems I mentioned, including that of a population that has grown recklessly, are the result of the greed of our Maltese ‘brothers’ and the political decisions that have been and are being made.”
“To place the blame and vent the anger towards ‘the foreigner’ is nothing but a banal excuse to distract us from the bigger picture.”
