Activists Demand Malta-Based Airline To Stop Shipping Endangered Monkeys For Testing

Maltese activists from the animal rights group Animal Liberation Malta are demanding that Malta-based airline Maleth-Aero stops transporting endangered animals for testing.

The demands were made during a demonstration held on 8th October in front of the Maleth-Aero headquarters in Luqa.

This comes after it was alleged by PETA that the airline is responsible for transporting hundreds of endangered macaque monkeys to “the United States from Cambodia, to be cut open, poisoned, imprisoned, and killed in laboratories”.

“This is a terrifying and traumatic ordeal for such sentient beings, who will also be suffering the agony of having been torn from their families and social groups,” PETA appealed.

“The negative welfare issues surrounding the shipping of non-human primates are compelling. Monkeys are transported as cargo in crates that are too small to permit movement, nor any exercise,” it continued.

“They may have to endure inadequate ventilation, noise, extreme temperature fluctuations, and delays en route.”

PETA also alleged that this was all done illegally, as the flight service never registered the journeys with the American Department of Agriculture.

Leading airlines across the globe have long abandoned this inhuman practice and ended their involvement in the business, including American Airlines, British Airways, Delta Airlines and China Airlines.

Earlier this year, the ICUN declared the Macaques species endangered due to the rapid population decline.
