AD Warns Of ‘Politics Of Hate’ As Some Observers Project Norman Lowell To Win Over 12,000 Votes

Alternattiva Demokratika chairperson Carmel Capocardo has warned that a “bigger percentage of voters than usual has decided to associate themselves with the politics of hate”, as counting agents start to indicate that Norman Lowell has made significant gains in the MEP election.

“This is worrying because this might lead to the bigger parties to pander to this culture rather than work against it. For decency’s sake as a nation, Maltese politics should understand and engage with xenophobia in a way which never ceases to uphold values of humanity and solidarity,” Capacardo said in a statement.

It should be noted that Lovin Malta has heard varying accounts on Lowell’s performance, with some even saying that he could get as much as 18,000 first count votes. Others have been much more conservative, rounding it off at closer to 12,000.

Projections posted by TVM showed that AD (0.2%) and PD (0.6%) polling a less than 1%, with independent candidates (which includes Lowell) currently have a 7.4% voting share.

Imperium Europa have steadily increased their vote share in each passing European election, jumping up from 1,600 in 2004 to 6,760 in 2014.

While a significant portion of votes may be attributed to Lowell’s Imperium Europa, Former AD Chairperson Arnold Cassola may have siphoned off some votes from AD.

Cassola himself has said that he believes that he got roughly 1% of the vote, while Lowell will get over 12,000 votes.
