Malta’s green party, the ADPD, as well as Partit ABBA have both called protests for this week in light of the ongoing power cuts amid Malta’s first heatwave for the summer.

ADPD called the protest yesterday afternoon, which will be held on 27th July at 7pm outside of Parliament in Valletta.

The protest is set to focus on widespread “corruption, incompetence, and carelessness” especially in relation to the ongoing blackouts.

“We’ll be protesting the corruption, incompetence and carelessness which are leading to the unbearable situation of repeated and long power cuts. We demand accountability for this situation,” the ADPD said in a statement.

“It is evident that the country is on its knees due to continuous power cuts. This means a huge burden on families and businesses. Everyone is affected, but the most affected are the vulnerable who are already crushed by inflation and wages that do not meet their basic needs.”

“Instead of costly massive projects and an economic policy based on overdevelopment and speculation, which led to an overburdened and inadequate infrastructure we demand a wellbeing economy,” it continued.

“Urgent action is needed before it’s too late… see you in Valletta!”

Meanwhile, Partit ABBA also called a protest yesterday morning, with the aim of finding out who is politically responsible for the ongoing power cuts.

Partit ABBA’s protest will be happening tomorrow 25th July at 7pm in front of the Parliament building in Valletta.

“Our main points are to see who is politically responsible and to make sure that those affected be given compensation,” Partit ABBA said on Facebook.

Over the last week, many residents across the Maltese islands have experienced serious power cuts, with some extending past three consecutive nights.

While Enemalta said yesterday that nearly all of the localities in Malta have had their electricity restored, residents from places like Rabat, San Ġwann, and Żabbar were saying that they still did not have an electrical supply.

Meanwhile, Malta is stepping into the worst days of the heatwave, with temperatures expected to peak in the coming three days.
