Adrian Delia Calls For Law To Limit Children’s Access To Social Media

Nationalist MP Adrian Delia has called for legislation to restrict children’s access to social media, warning that the damage caused by excessive screen time from a young age is “incalculable.”
Speaking to Lovin Malta, Delia explained how his concerns stemmed from a personal experience a few months ago.
“I took my two-year-old son to a restaurant that didn’t have Wi-Fi and he threw a tantrum the likes of which I had never seen before. After that incident, we decided to wean him off technology entirely. Now, he plays with more traditional toys. This technology is having a massive psychological impact on children,” he said.
While Delia pledged to push for legal changes in his capacity as an MP, he stressed that legislation must be accompanied by a broader educational campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of early addiction to digital devices.
“Today you even see pushchairs with screens attached. Recently we went out to eat and every child at the restaurant was glued to a device, their heads bent low over their tables.”
Delia added that from his preliminary research, he found concerning trends, such as that when school projects are assigned as homework, it’s often the parents who end up completing them because children are too distracted by their devices.
He also warned that social interaction between children themselves is also being lost.
