Adrian Delia Publishes BOV Accounts To Clear His Name

With two days to go until the PN leadership election, contestant Adrian Delia has published statements proving he has a savings account and an overdraft account at Bank of Valletta.

Following a request by Delia, BOV sent him a copy of the statements to his two active deposit accounts with the bank held in his personal name – one of which is a savings account and the other of which is an overdraft account.

Sources told Lovin Malta the existence of the overdraft account puts to bed suggestions Delia is battling insolvency – as the bank would have closed the account immediately if it had suspected he was unable to pay back his debts.

Journalist-blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia has claimed BOV had closed down Delia’s current accounts earlier this year, and BOV’s statement of his accounts does not include any current accounts.

However, sources close to Delia told Lovin Malta the lawyer didn’t own a personal current account at BOV in the first place because he uses another bank for daily banking needs.

Delia  said the current account Caruana Galizia referred to had belonged to a client of his, and BOV shut it down because the client was using it for trading purposes. The bank ended up opening a separate account for the client through which he could trade.

At a press conference yesterday, Delia accused Caruana Galizia of creating a false story so as to divert public attention from his political message.

“I have no problems with the bank and I have no financial problems. I never have and I never will,” he said. “It is the Nationalist Party which has financial problems – nobody is asking how much the PN owes, to whom, and who had arranged that debt.”

Caruana Galizia told Lovin Malta the documents do nothing to harm her reports BOV had closed down his current account, and dismissed Delia’s explanation the current account in question had belonged to his client.

“I have never heard of a situation in which a person has a savings account at a commercial bank without a current account associated with it,” he said.

She said Delia’s explanation the shut-down current account had belonged to a client of his doesn’t make sense, given that Delia would have been legally responsible for it if it was registered under his name.

Who do you think will win the Nationalist Party leadership election on Saturday?
