PN MP and Former PN Leader Adrian Delia has appealed that it’s time Malta admits that the country is currently in a state of national emergency.

“I have always maintained that this is not a normal country,” he said in a Facebook post. “Now we have to admit that this country is in a state of national emergency.”

Delia published this statement shortly after posting: “Hours without power are inconvenient. Days in the dark are unacceptable. Mater Dei with the generators not keeping up: immoral!”

After over a week of widespread power cuts during a particularly long and intense heatwave causing chaos to the everyone’s life, Mater Dei’s generators failed on Sunday night with essential services such as ITU being powered by batteries.

Four have since been confirmed dead due to heat issues.

Malta’s Health Ministry has confirmed with Lovin Malta that a total of three patients died of dehydration as the main cause of death, while another person died due to hyperthermia in just two days.

Even Benna, Malta’s main milk production facility, has announced that it might experience reduced supply: “the company is currently experiencing difficulties in maintaining the usual milk production levels”.

The debilitating sweltering heat experienced by the heatwave was compounded by the lack of power to create mass discontent in the country – added to widespread traffic jams with roads closed far and wide many are not enjoying summer as they normally would.

Delia’s post has garnered almost 1,500 reactions and over 300 comments, signalling continued and rising civil anger.

Many are pointing at overpopulation as the main culprit to our woes but mismanagement is also mentioned frequently.
