After Accident Causes Major Traffic Jams Across Malta, PN MP Calls For Better Public Transport
Nationalist MP Toni Bezzina has called for a “reliable and efficient” form of public transport to be implemented as soon as possible following the latest accident-induced traffic jam.
Bezzina warned that Triq Diċembru 13 in Marsa was partially closed yesterday following a traffic accident. As a result of this intervention, large parts of Malta – including Kirkop, Luqa, Żejtun, Santa Luċija, Qormi and Paola – were quickly clogged with traffic.
“This shows that we have become too dependent on private cars, and that the millions of euro spent to upgrade junctions can evaporate in a minute,” he warned. “A reliable and efficient public transport system, implemented as soon as possible, is the only solution.”
In a recent interview with Lovin Malta, PN MP Adrian Delia – the party’s transport spokesperson – proposed a number of short-term solutions to combat the notorious traffic problem.
Delia said the government should incentivise people to work from home and incentivise youths to stick with alternative forms of transport as soon as they become legal drivers.
“The main problem is the minister refuses to acknowledge that increasing cars on the road is an intrinsic part of the problem,” he said.
