A Maltese woman has opened up about her real appreciation for Malta’s healthcare system after having a serious accident abroad, and needing to stay abroad during part of her recovery.

Her post, which was shared in popular Facebook Group Are You Being Served?, has garnered over 3,000 reactions within hours, with many thanking her for the positive message and perspective on something many locally regularly complain about.

“Four weeks ago I was involved in a tragic car accident in Sicily. After a week in ITU and two weeks in a general hospital in Catania, I was transferred to Mater Dei hospital where I spent another week. Today I’m finally continuing my recovery at home. After having experienced a hospital abroad and our own hospital as a patient, I can truly say what a difference!”

“We Maltese and anyone living in Malta have no idea how lucky we are! I was never so desperate to come back home!”

She praised Malta’s system for its modern approach as well as the care shown by the local healthcare professionals maintaining the standards.

“Our health care system is much more advanced and up to date with the most recent guidelines. I was admitted at the Orthopaedic Ward 2 at MDH, where the nursing care is truly exceptional.”

“They restored my dignity and showed me how to be independent with my limitations. In the general hospital in Catania even basic nursing care was lacking.”

“The physiotherapists here are brilliant, after three weeks on a bed in Sicily, they helped me get up on my feet and made miracles in just one week. I am now walking again slowly on my own.”

Ending by saying she had nothing but praise for the “nurses the doctors, the carers, the physiotherapists, occupational therapists, the cleaners” she made it clear that MDH was a key part in her speedy recovery process.

Hundreds of people chimed in, sharing their own positive experiences under Malta’s healthcare system.

Malta’s healthcare system has long been a key part of the island’s culture, with a long history of providing free public healthcare, and the island already having a fully functioning hospital all the way back in 1372.

While Mater Dei has received its fair share of criticism – not least in the recent case of US traveller Andrea Prudente as well as an ongoing understaffing issue – it is great to see the hard work the MDH staff put into their patients receiving public praise.
