After 50 years of flight, Air Malta will officially cease operations today and will immediately be replaced by a new national airline – KM Malta Airlines.

Rome-Fiumicino is set to be Air Malta’s final flight, while KM Malta Airlines’ inaugural flight tomorrow will see it depart to Catania.

“Today, as we bid farewell to Air Malta, I extend my sincerest thanks to all the flight deck crew, cabin crew, engineers, ground staff, technical support, operations personnel, head office staff, and individuals in various interlinked roles who have been an integral part of the airline’s journey,” Air Malta chairman Prof. Philip von Brockdorff said.

“From tomorrow, the new national airline, KM Malta Airlines, will proudly carry the Maltese flag in our skies.”

He said that Air Malta leaves behind a “remarkable legacy” and pledged that KM Malta Airlines will provide exceptional service, connectivity, and a seamless travel experience for passengers.

Air Malta was forced to shut down after years of financial problems and state aid negotiations with the EU.

The new airline will operate 17 routes instead of 37 and use eight planes instead of 10 as part of its plan to register a profit.
