PL deputy leader Alex Agius Saliba has stood by Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg over his recent comments referring to the war in the Middle East.

During a political activity on Sunday, Borg touched upon a number of ongoing global conflicts and wars.

“We cannot forget that we still have several ongoing wars and conflicts like the one in the Middle East, in Gaza, there remain Israeli hostages who haven’t been released, and in Ukraine,” he said.

While he made a political point about the hostages (stating they have to be returned), he didn’t delve into the situation faced by the people of Gaza.

Borg has previously condemned Israeli attacks on Gaza on a number of occasions and has repeatedly called for a ceasefire, while stating that Hamas should have no future in the governance of Gaza.

Following Borg latest statement, Lovin Malta requested the opinion of Agius Saliba, who has been one of the PL’s most vocal pro-Palestine advocates.

“I was present during that meeting and can confirm that Deputy Prime Minister Borg did not comment solely about Israeli hostages, as Lovin Malta stated in its report,” Agius Saliba said.

“In fact, he expressed solidarity for the victims of all ongoing conflicts, including the Middle East, mentioning Gaza as well as the hostages. He also referred to the victims of the war in Ukraine.”

“I have full trust in the work being undertaken by DPM Ian Borg and I am also looking forward for the recognition of the State of Palestine as confirmed also by the Prime Minister and DPM.”

Robert Abela has hinted that Malta could recognise Palestine as a state following an upcoming UN conference on a two-state solution.
