Nationalist MP Alex Borg had harsh words for Il-Kollettiv activist Wayne Flask, accusing him of elitism, pseudo-intellectualism and living in a bubble.

Flask had called out Borg after the PN MP dismissed third parties as “one-man shows” and urged people to join established parties where they can work as part of a team, rather than individually.

“Borg said youths should militate with PN or PL, which is the equivalent of putting a goldfish in a shark tank and telling him you’ll see him tomorrow,” Flask said, describing Borg as “the favourite candidate” of former PN minister Giovanna Debono and developer Joseph Portelli.

He went on to ask questions to Borg over the Għajnsielem local council’s vote in favour of the Fort Chambray development project, his recent article hailing construction as an economic driver, and rumours that he is planning to unseat Bernard Grech as PN leader.

Borg came out swinging and said that his statement proves that Il-Kollettiv will have barely anything to offer besides narcissism and protagonism if it decides to form a political party.

“What is the party you want to set up offering? A politics of ‘no’ and preaching from the pulpit?”

He said that while he has barely ever spoken to Portelli, he has no shame of his closeness to Debono.

“I have no shame of saying that Giovanna Debono instilled in my family and I a sense of public duty and service, something that you, perhaps as a result of disrespect, elitism and pseudo-intellectualism hidden by a keffiyeh, fails to understand.”

“If this is what you are offering in your new party, I regret to tell you that you will start off on the wrong foot.”

Responding to his questions, he said that the Għajnsielem council took a collective decision, that politicians in parties are allowed to express personal opinions, that his only leader is Bernard Grech, and that the PN’s recent electoral gains were the result of collective work.

“We got there through people understanding people, a concept that is alien to you.”

“I urge your party to listen more and speak less. Above all, I urge you to understand that parties are there to offer a public service and not to satisfy thoughts in a bubble.”
