Alleged Killer Of Mildred Azzopardi Suspended From Post As Soldier

Benjamin Chetcuti, the 23-year-old man charged with the involuntary homicide of Mildred Azzopardi, has been suspended from his duties as a soldier, the Armed Forces of Malta (AFM) told Lovin Malta.
Chetcuti fatally crashed into the mother of four as she was placing items in the back of a vehicle on Xatt il-Barriera, Valletta. A breathalyser test found that he was more than five times above the legal limit while court evidence showed he was driving at 98km/hr moments before he struck Azzopardi.
Responding to questions sent by Lovin Malta, a spokesperson for the AFM confirmed that Chetcuti was suspended from duty pending the outcome of judicial proceedings.
Chetcuti was charged with involuntary homicide, involuntarily injuring a man – Mildred’s husband, drink-driving, reckless driving, speeding, driving without insurance, as well as committing an offence which he was duty-bound to prevent.
Following the incident Alfred Azzopardi – Mildred’s husband – was in critical condition. He is now out of ITU but is still being treated for serious injuries.
Footage played earlier today in court showed Azzopardi crossing the road when, moments later, a car gained speed, crashed head-on into the victim and sent her to the other side of the pavement, over two cars.
