Rachelle Deguara, the international secretary of Alternattiva Demokratika, has been confirmed as a singer at Malta’s first ever pro-choice rally this Saturday.

Deguara, who performs hip-hop and rap music under the name REA and is an activist with Moviment Graffitti and the new group Young Progressive Beings, joined AD’s executive committee last July.

Her endorsement of the rally comes a few months after another AD executive member, Mina Tolu, called for a respectful debate on abortion, warning the taboo around the topic is breeding stigma and harming many.

After the party refused to disassociate itself from Tolu’s stance and come out unequivocally against abortion, former AD leader Arnold Cassola quit the party and contested the 2019 European Parliament elections as an independent candidate.

The pro-choice rally will take place at Hastings Garden, Valletta this Saturday to coincide with International Safe Abortion Day. It is being organised by Voice For Choice, a coalition of NGOs that launched earlier this year as a lobby group for the legalisation of abortion.
