A Maltese-Made Cafe In London Was Just Nominated For Lots Of Architecture Awards
The Colicci kiosk in Wesfield Stratford, London is having its moment in the sun as it has been shortlisted for four Restaurant And Bar Awards. Why do we care? The architects behind the building are Mizzi Studio, a Maltese group headed by Jonathan Mizzi.
Specifically the kiosk has been nominated for an International best ceiling design, best outside design, and best for leisure. As well as a UK-specific category, best in fast/casual.
And just look at this thing.
We’re jealous they don’t have one here!
The windswept design gives an almost nautical feel, like something raised from the ocean floor and shined to perfection. A total of 524 sections of copper are held together with thousands of rivets and a fiberglass shell.
“We are very honoured to receive 4 nominations for such prestigious design awards.” Said Jonathan Mizzi, who spoke to Lovin Malta “The project was an incredible journey of sweat, blood and tears and was a great example of collaborative teamwork at our studio. It’s lovely to have a nice pat on the back from the industry, and as we are only half way through awards season we may be fortunate and gain more recognition.”
The kiosk belongs to Collici, a food retailer that started out as a single ice-cream truck in the 90’s and grew into a much-loved cafe with 8 locations around London.
The mastermind behind this beautiful piece of street art also teamed up with David Bonello, Victoria Farrugia Galea & MMP Studios to create the new Chiswick House School in Pembroke, which has been causing some controversy among the locals.
