Another Weekend, More Environmental Crimes: Malta’s Rangers Document 3 New Cases In Qalet Marku

Over the last long weekend, Malta’s Rangers Unit documented yet another three environmental crimes which took place in Baħar iċ-Ċagħaq’s Qalet Marku.

This comes just mere days after a number of individuals were caught burning litter in the Garigue seaside area, as documented by the rangers.

While Qalet Marku has no restriction when it comes to fires and BBQs (except for having to be 10m away from ‘schedule I’ protected trees), it’s illegal to leave any trace whatsoever, since it will count as defacing/littering of public space.

“At least 4 individuals have been successfully identified/documented by our Rangers during long hours monitoring the site,” the Rangers said on social media on Monday.

Among the crimes recently documented were, dumping of waste, cutting of protected trees, littering, and leaving hot charcoal on the ground.

“Our Rangers will now spend time putting all this into an extensive report and hand over footage to police and ERA (due to cutting of tamarisk) so that offenders will be charged/fined and held accountable.”

The rangers once again took a moment to remind the public that while doing a fire, where it’s allowed, one should always, elevate it and use brought firewood, take any leftovers back so as to leave no trace behind, and not burn any waste.
