Members of the German anti-poaching organisation Campaign Against Bird Slaughter were shot at twice yesterday whilst patrolling a field in Girgenti.

The CABS campaigners were out monitoring protected birds of prey in Buskett when they came in the line of fire of shotgun bullets supposedly from a “suspicious person” believed to be a poacher in the valley.

Upon returning to their vehicle, parked on the main road in Girgenti valley, they discovered that the left rear of the vehicle was “peppered with shot damage and dozens of lead pellets still embedded in the sheet metal,” according to CABS team leader Fiona Burrows.

Police were called to the scene and documented the damage but were unable to carry out a search as it was already dark.

This incident comes only a few days after a major police investigation was carried out in the area following CABS filming the protected Bee-Eater being shot down by poachers.

CABS has offered a €2,500 reward for any information leading to the arrest of the person(s) responsible for shooting the car.

No one was hurt during this incident.
