The Malta Police Union has called for a “proper and real independent inquiry” into the current issue related to the warrants of arrest issued against Iosif Galea.

This comes after it was revealed that Malta’s police had been in possession of a European Arrest Warrant for Iosif Galea issued by Germany for more than a year, but he was not arrested in Malta.

“The Malta Police Union considers the allegations being put forward against the Police Force, and members of the Police Force very serious as these might have repercussions on one or many of our members,” it said in a statement.

“In view of this, and keeping in mind, in particular, the overriding imperative of any inquiry worthy of its name to arrive at the full truth, and in order to avoid any frame-up or cover-up, the Union is requesting Prime Minister Robert Abela or the Minister for Home Affairs Byron Camilleri, National Security, Security, Reforms and Equality, to appoint a proper and real independent inquiry,” it said.

The Malta Police Union also stated that it will not accept any findings by any Board which is not independent or seen to be independent.

“This is another step, the Malta Police Union is taking to ensure that justice is not only done, but seen to be done,” it said.

“In this regard, we deem that the decision to have the Independent Police Complaint Board, established through Chapter 164 of the Laws of Malta not correct as this Board does not have enough statutory powers to investigate, especially in the area of criminal matters,” it stated.

Independent politician Arnold Cassola also publicly requested an Ombudsman investigation into the Commissioner of Police, Angelo Gafa’, and the police media officer over this case.

Galea is wanted in connection to an investigation into trading in influence and leaking sensitive data at the Malta Gaming Authority.
