Archbishop Charles Scicluna Blasts EU For Declaring Abortion A ‘Fundamental Human Right’

Archbishop Charles Scicluna has come out strongly against the European Parliament after it once again voted in favour of declaring abortion to be a fundamental human right.

“They want you to believe that you have a right to kill an unborn baby,” Scicluna told a mass in Birgu yesterday.

“There is nothing worse than this kind of discarding and they’re calling it a fundamental human right… the right to kill an innocent baby. I won’t name the names of those speaking like this because everyone knows who they are.”

“We need a greater sense of human dignity. We’re worried about people getting killed in a war but at the same time, we’re declaring we have a right to kill unborn babies. Try and understand what sense this makes.”

Last week, MEPs overwhelmingly voted in favour of enshrining safe and legal abortion within the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights and urging member states to decriminalise abortion.

PL MEPs Alfred Sant and Cyrus Engerer voted in favour of this resolution, while PL MEPs Josianne Cutajar and Alex Cutajar and PN MEP David Casa voted against.

As European Parliament President, Malta’s sixth MEP – Roberta Metsola – is obliged to take the Parliament’s position, which is clearly in favour of declaring abortion to be a fundamental human right.

As it stands, Malta is the last EU country which still has a blanket ban on abortion but political pressure has been intensifying, with Health Minister Chris Fearne recently ordering a review of the law after 135 doctors signed a judicial protest in this regard.

However, Scicluna’s homily indicates that the Church has no intention of remaining silent during this crucial debate.

Besides abortion, the Archbishop also weighed in on the latest update to Malta’s IVF law, which allows couples to test their embryos for certain serious hereditary conditions prior to implantation.

Drawing parallels with eugenics, he said that people shouldn’t be discarded because they aren’t “perfect”.
