Archbishop Charles Scicluna praised former headmaster Mario Mallia’s inclusive initiatives at the St Albert The Great College during a meeting with the school. However, his termination and potential return were not discussed.

During a meeting on 10th August, Scicluna met with representatives and educators of the college in the wake of the controversy surrounding Mario Mallia’s termination.

“We are proud that the Archbishop confirmed that the initiatives we have taken over the years as a college, under the leadership of Mario Mallia, are in accordance with the vision of the church as expressed by Pope Francis and the Archbishop himself,” the school said in a statement.

“As staff members and educators of the St Albert The Great College we would like to express our gratitude for the reception we were given by Archbishop Charles Scicluna; a meeting that took place with him on 9th August.”

“We appreciate the support that we were given particularly for the efforts we are making to make our vision come true.”

“It was of great encouragement for us to witness the appreciation for the inclusivity initiatives with a spirit of openness and dialogue that were implemented at the college.”

“In particular, we referred to the subject MEET and the establishment of the cooperative ‘This is Coop’ among others.”

During this meeting, the educators also expressed their desire for these initiatives to leave a positive effect on church schools and education in general.

From his end, the Archbishop expressed his willingness for these initiatives to be implemented by other church schools, particularly by the schools that fall under his direct leadership.

“We also discussed the need for the church institutions to protect the communities from people who want they take too much power into their own hands,” they said.

While the Archbishop praised the work done by the college under Mario Mallia as headmaster, his dismissal and potential return do not seem to be addressed during the meeting.

Mallia was abruptly dismissed from his position as headmaster of St Albert the Great College in Valletta after disagreements with the board of the college, including over a number of inclusive initiatives.
