Architect And Former PN Minister Michael Falzon Dies Aged 79
Born in 1945, Falzon was a leading figure in Eddie Fenech Adami’s first governments and a media commentator both before and after his time in politics. He was also among the founders of the Malta Developers Association.
Prime Minister Robert Abela announced his death earlier today, saying he spoke with the former minister a few weeks ago.
“I worked with Michael professionally many years ago when we founded one of the country’s largest associations. He last visited me just a few weeks ago, and we had an interesting discussion about how we see the future of our country and how we can improve it,” Abela wrote on social media.
“We had differing opinions at times, but respect was never lacking. His thoughts were always presented in such a way that they focused on the greater good. I am deeply saddened by his loss.”
Falzon served as a Member of Parliament across four legislatures for over 30 years. First elected in 1976, he spent the first 11 years of his political career representing the opposition. In 1987, following the Nationalist Party’s landslide victory, Falzon was appointed Infrastructure Minister, where he played a key role in overseeing the construction of the Delimara power station.
When the Nationalist Party secured a second consecutive term in 1992, he was appointed Education Minister. Although he stepped down from frontline politics in 1996, Falzon made a brief return to the political stage in 2004, running for a seat in the European Parliament following Malta’s accession to the EU.
Lovin Malta extends its sincere condolences to Falzon’s family and loved ones during this difficult time
